Whatever Happened to the Barefoot Kicker?

Seeing as how I'm not the first person on the Jurisdynamics Network to invoke the NFL as a metaphor for the law and legal academia (see here and here), I will spend exactly no time exploring the extent to which it is apt in a broad sense. But - perhaps especially since I've recently spent time with a few classic pieces of legal scholarship - it seems to me that some easy parallels emerge from Chuck Klosterman's recent essay entitled A brilliant idea! (For now).
